Gurman: Apple’s first mixed reality device to launch as early as 2022
- Apple’s first mixed reality device could be coming next year.
- Gurman says it will be expensive and have both AR and VR capabilities.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, reliable leaker Mark Gurman (reliability: 84.38%) talked about Apple’s upcoming mixed reality device. Gurman has previously said that Apple is working on a mixed reality headset, so it makes sense that it is almost ready for production. Gurman says the device may be launched as early as next year.
Apple is planning to unleash its own pricey device with advanced chips, displays, sensor, and avatar-based features as early as next year.
Earlier this year, reports stated that the device could cost up to $3,000, which explains why Gurman says it will be pricey. Gurman also discussed whether the device will be used for gaming or just augmented reality. Even though the Mac has amazing performance and power, it cannot compete with Sony and Microsoft in the gaming department. This may also be the case for this mixed reality device. Gurman also says that the device will have both augmented reality and virtual reality, enabling gaming and other activities in both scenarios. It is unclear what the device's form factor will be, but it could be similar to the rumored Apple Glasses or something like the Oculus Quest.
Apple’s first headset will be of the mixed reality variety. That means it will have both AR and VR capabilities. While gaming can be done in both environments, virtual reality is what you want for seriously high-performance games with top-tier graphics. For Apple’s first headset, that’s what it’s shooting for: a mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality with snappy chips and high-end displays.
Although this device may be available next year, it will likely not be Apple’s best augmented reality device. Gurman says that we can expect a true AR-only headset in the coming years.
