Apple iPhone 17: Rumors Hint at 120Hz Displays for All Models

iPhone 17
  • Apple's 120Hz ProMotion tech might just be coming to every iPhone 17—yes, even the basic ones!
  • Say goodbye to 60Hz; Apple’s rumored display upgrade could make the next iPhone the smoothest yet.
  • Rumor has it, Apple’s base models are about to get a display boost that’ll have everyone talking.

In a potentially groundbreaking move for Apple's next smartphone series, a report from South Korea's ETNews suggests that all iPhone 17 models—set for launch in 2025—could feature low-power LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) displays. This technology, which Apple uses to enhance battery efficiency while supporting higher refresh rates, points to the inclusion of ProMotion displays across the entire lineup, enabling up to 120Hz refresh rates for smoother scrolling, fluid animations, and an overall more responsive experience.A concept rendering of Apple's upcoming iPhone 17, expected in late 2025.Photo via Apple Scoop // A concept rendering of Apple's upcoming iPhone 17, expected in late 2025.

A Shift for Base Models

Since its introduction on the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021, ProMotion has been reserved for Apple's Pro models. If the rumors are correct, the iPhone 17 series would mark the first time that base models gain access to ProMotion technology. Supply chain analyst Ross Young previously hinted at this possibility, predicting that the iPhone 17 and the tentatively named "iPhone 17 Air" will feature ProMotion, aligning with Apple's ongoing push to enhance user experience across all its devices.iPhone 17 Air: A concept image of Apple's upcoming ultra-slim iPhone, expected to replace Apple's 'Plus' iPhone model.Photo via Times of India // iPhone 17 Air: A concept image of Apple's upcoming ultra-slim iPhone, expected to replace Apple's 'Plus' iPhone model.

Samsung Display and LG Display are currently supplying panels to Apple. Chinese display companies have no history of supplying LTPO to Apple, so it is highly likely that Korean display companies will monopolize the entire iPhone 17 series volume next year.— ETNews

With this display enhancement, users of both the base and Pro iPhone 17 models can expect:

  1. Smoother Scrolling – A seamless, responsive feel to everyday interactions.
  2. Enhanced Video Playback – Optimized display for an immersive viewing experience.
  3. Efficient Power Management – LTPO allows the display to adjust to lower refresh rates when high rates are unnecessary, reducing battery consumption.

Why ProMotion Matters

LTPO technology in OLED displays not only provides a smoother, high-refresh experience but also intelligently ramps down refresh rates to save power, with Apple’s Pro models able to scale down as low as 1Hz. While it’s not yet confirmed if the iPhone 17 base models will have this capability, industry expectations suggest a range between 10Hz and 120Hz.

"Once you use a high refresh rate display, it's difficult to go back," said an unnamed industry expert.

Key Features: Beyond ProMotion

Apple’s rumored upgrades extend beyond the display. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently shared insights on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the iPhone 17 series might also feature Apple’s proprietary Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chips and its own 5G modem, which could first appear in the iPhone SE 4.Apple's next-generation iPhone SE, expected to be called iPhone SE 4, will feature its own propietary 5G/WiFi/Bluetooth modem, according to new rumors.Photo via 9to5Mac // Apple's next-generation iPhone SE, expected to be called iPhone SE 4 (pictured above), may feature its own propietary 5G/WiFi/Bluetooth modem, according to new rumors.

Such advancements would mark Apple’s gradual shift away from third-party suppliers and strengthen its control over hardware integrations. This could be a transformative step in reducing reliance on external suppliers, potentially improving device security, and offering tighter hardware-software integration for iPhone users.

Industry Impact and Speculations

The decision to bring ProMotion to base models could have a ripple effect across the smartphone industry. Competing brands may feel the need to reevaluate their offerings for mid-tier phones as Apple pushes premium features into its standard models.

“ProMotion coming to the iPhone 17 base models is a game changer,” noted an industry insider. “It’s not just about smoother displays; it’s about giving users a premium experience even at the entry level.”

With Apple's anticipated announcement in September 2025, the industry will be watching closely for additional details. Given the timeline, it’s possible Apple’s plans could shift before the official release. Nonetheless, if the rumors hold, Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup could set a new standard in display technology for flagship smartphones.
