Apple's iPhone 15 lineup is eagerly awaited by the tech world and rumors have been circulating like wildfire about what the next iteration of the iconic smartphone will bring. The lineup will expectedly feature four models when released this fall, called the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

iPhone 15 Pro models

As with every iPhone generation, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be the standout devices. The iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to feature a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a 6.7-inch display. This would be the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to feature an updated design, with thinner, curved bezels and a new titanium chassis. Apple is also expected to add solid-state buttons with haptic feedback that will mimic a button press when touched.

The 3-nanometer A17 chip will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, according to multiple reports, while the base-level iPhone 15 models will use the same A16 chip that was present in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

All iPhone 15 models will feature the Dynamic Island, introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro, and will transition from Lightning to USB-C ports. However, only the iPhone 15 Pro lineup has been rumored to feature an upgraded USB-C port with USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds.

A17 chip & Camera upgrades

More RAM is expected to be included with the A17 chip, according to recent reports. However, it has been stated that all iPhone 15 models will have the same 5G Qualcomm modem chip technology for connectivity. The main difference between the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will be the telephoto camera lens, used for long-focus shots. Both Pro models will reportedly have a three-camera array, however, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a periscope lens that will enable 6x optical zoom, a significant improvement over the 3x zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro models. This is a welcome upgrade for photography-loving Apple fans.

Design & display

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have a similar look to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, with 6.1 and 6.7-inch OLED displays and a Dynamic Island cutout for the camera and Face ID hardware. Apple debuted the Dynamic Island with last year's iPhone 14 Pro models, replacing the iconic notch that has been in place since the iPhone X.

However, there have been rumors of some changes to the chassis of the two Pro models, with thinner, curved bezels compared to the iPhone 14 Pro models. The displays are expected to remain flat, similar to the design of the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8.

Materials

Instead of stainless steel this year, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to use titanium for their frames. Compared to stainless steel, titanium is lighter and stronger, but harder to work with — along with being more expensive. The use of titanium is expected to make the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro models, but the weight will be determined by the alloy that Apple uses. Titanium has a matte finish that won't attract fingerprints like stainless steel and is more resistant to dents, dings, and bending. However, it may be easier to scratch as the oxide layer is easily damaged and can make minor scratches stand out.

Solid state buttons

The iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to feature solid-state buttons with haptic feedback instead of physical buttons. A haptic vibration will be used to mimic a button press and give the sensation of pressing down, even when there is no physical movement of the button. Apple already uses solid-state technology for the Touch ID Home button on the iPhone SE and the trackpad on the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. Two additional Taptic Engines will reportedly be added to the iPhone 15 Pro models to power the solid-state buttons.

Conclusion

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are shaping up to be the standout devices in Apple's upcoming iPhone lineup, featuring a host of new features and improvements. The titanium chassis, solid-state buttons, and periscope lens are just some of the highlights that we can expect from these devices later this year.
