Android manufacturers are now copying the iPhone's flat design

  • Xiaomi and Honor are using flat edges on their latest smartphones.
  • Android manufacturers are taking inspiration from Apple after it introduced a 120Hz display on the iPhone 13 Pro.

Last year, Apple released the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lineup of devices with a new design consisting of flat edges, glass back and a flat display. This was very well received by customers and has been compared to that of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s.

It appears that Android manufacturers are now beginning to adopt this new design, following the release of the iPhone 13. As noted by XDA Developers, Xiaomi has shared teasers for the upcoming Redmi Note 11 phone, and it features a design with flat edges. This is in comparison to the previous Note 10, which had rounded sides and a more conventional design. While Xiaomi isn’t replicating any more of Apple’s design features, like the removal of the headphone jack, it’s a clear sign that the hardware design of the iPhone 12 and 13 will be adopted by more manufacturers.

According to promotional material showing off the new devices, Honor appears to be copying Apple too. It’s design cues have gone even further, replicating the flat edges and completely flat back of the iPhone, but also the camera layout. This has separate camera modules for each lens, and additional flash bump. Although Apple has been criticized for copying features introduced by Android manufacturers years in advance, like the 120Hz display or dual cameras, it usually polishes and iterates further. This design is blatantly influenced by Apple's iPhone, and more are likely to follow in the near future.
