Apple fixes damaging USB bug with macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 update
- Today, Apple released the fourth macOS Big Sur update, macOS version 11.2.2.
- This update addresses many issues, including ones relating to damage caused by certain USB devices.
- This bug only seems to only affect MacBooks from 2019 and later, and is reportedly fixed in the update.
As mentioned above, this software update solves problems with MacBooks involving USB docks, hubs and other devices non-compliant with certain Macs. Many users have reported that after connecting such devices to their MacBooks, they would become unresponsive and blank. This bug seems to cause some damage to the machines, and users have had varying success rebooting or recovering their laptops, even after considerable time. It is unknown whether this bug causes physical damage to Macs (and this bug purely prevents it from preventing so far unaffected MacBooks), or if it is related to firmware (and can be patched on already damaged MacBooks). Regardless, the fix is certainly welcome and will hopefully resolve any issues stemming from this bug. This update is available to install for all Macs compatible with macOS Big Sur. You can read more about the update here on Apple’s website.
