  • Apple's M4 chip is about to shake up the Mac lineup—here’s what’s coming.
  • Get ready for faster Macs and a smaller Mac mini design... but that's not all.
  • Hold off on that MacBook Pro purchase—the M4 upgrade is closer than you think.

Apple is gearing up to launch an updated lineup of Mac devices, featuring its latest M4 chips. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the tech giant plans to release refreshed versions of the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini later this year. This update marks a significant shift for the Mac lineup, as the company begins incorporating its powerful M4 processors, already found in the latest iPad Pro models, into its desktop and laptop computers.

New MacBook Pro Models with M4 Chips

The MacBook Pro is expected to receive notable internal upgrades with the addition of M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chip options. These new chips promise substantial performance gains, with up to 25% faster multi-core CPU performance compared to the M3 chip, which currently powers many Mac devices. The M4 chip's 10-core CPU will replace the M3’s 8-core configuration, delivering more power and efficiency.

However, don't expect significant design changes this year. Gurman notes that major design updates, such as OLED displays and a thinner form factor, are unlikely to appear until 2026 at the earliest. The MacBook Pro models are on track for an internal upgrade with the M4, but no major design changes this year.Photo via Gadget Flow // The MacBook Pro models are on track for an internal upgrade with the M4, but no major design changes this year.

iMac to Get M4 Chip, But No Design Overhaul

The iMac is also slated for an M4 upgrade, but similar to the MacBook Pro, it will retain its existing design. Apple last updated the iMac lineup in October 2023, and while the performance boost from the M4 chip is expected to be impressive, no rumors suggest external changes to the desktop computer’s look. One unanswered question is whether Apple will update accessories like the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad to use USB-C instead of the current Lightning connector. The current iMac lineup, which will soon feature Apple's powerful M4 chips.Photo via Macworld // The current iMac lineup, which will soon feature Apple's powerful M4 chips.

A Smaller Mac Mini on the Horizon

Perhaps the most exciting news is the upcoming redesign of the Mac mini. Reports suggest the new model will be significantly smaller, nearly as compact as an Apple TV, while featuring a robust range of M4 and M4 Pro chip options. The device is expected to forgo USB-A ports entirely in favor of five USB-C ports, two of which will be located on the front for easier access.

If these rumors hold, this will be the first major redesign of the Mac mini since 2010. For users looking for a compact yet powerful desktop machine, the redesigned Mac mini may offer an ideal solution.Apple's redesigned Mac mini is expected to be significantly smaller and more compact.Photo via The Shortcut // Apple's redesigned Mac mini is expected to be significantly smaller and more compact.

What to Expect from Apple's Upcoming Event

Apple's yearly October event, often used to announce Mac and iPad updates, is expected to serve as the stage for these M4-powered devices. Gurman had previously hinted at an October announcement, but his language has since shifted to suggest the launches could happen "later this year," leaving room for the possibility of a slight delay. Nonetheless, Apple is still expected to introduce these devices before the year's end.

How the M4 Compares to the M3

The M4 chip, which debuted in the iPad Pro earlier this year, has shown impressive performance in benchmarks, particularly in multi-core CPU tasks. The chip offers up to 25% faster performance compared to the M3, and its 10-core CPU outperforms the M3’s 8-core variant. Apple’s ability to continue pushing the boundaries of its in-house silicon is key to maintaining its dominance in the laptop and desktop markets.

What's Next for Apple Silicon?

While this year's focus is on bringing the M4 chip to the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini, Apple’s roadmap extends well into the future. According to Gurman, the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro will be upgraded with M4 chips in 2025. These upgrades will likely coincide with additional advancements in Apple's AI-powered features, known as Apple Intelligence.

Should You Wait to Buy?

If you’re in the market for a MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac mini, it may be wise to hold off for now. With the M4 updates around the corner, buying current M3 models might not offer the best value in the long run. On the other hand, if you’re considering a MacBook Air, iPad Air, or iPad Pro, feel free to make your purchase, as those lines aren’t expected to receive M4 chips until next year.

Apple is poised to make its latest Macs more powerful than ever, solidifying its place at the forefront of the personal computing market. With M4 chips set to raise the bar for performance, this year's lineup will likely be the go-to choice for professionals and casual users alike.
