iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 models may feature new Action and Capture buttons.
  • Pro models could have larger displays with slimmer bezels.
  • Standard models might see vertically stacked cameras.
  • Design changes aim for improved functionality without drastic overhauls.

The upcoming iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models are not expected to undergo a significant design overhaul, but there are several noteworthy changes rumored. These changes, while not radical departures from previous models, could help the new iPhones stand out. Here's a look at the five biggest design rumors for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

Action Button on Every iPhone

One of the most prominent additions is the Action button, which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, replacing the traditional mute switch. This button allows users to silence calls, trigger shortcuts, and perform specific actions, and it is expected to be included on all iPhone 16 models. The Action button on the iPhone 16 will work much the same as on the current Pro models, allowing users to customize it through the Settings app for various functions like launching an app, turning on the flashlight, or starting the voice recorder. However, it remains unclear if Apple will allow the Action button to support multiple presses for different shortcuts.

Introduction of the Capture Button

Another rumored addition is a new Capture button, anticipated to be featured on every iPhone 16 model. This button, reportedly located just below the power button, is speculated to launch the Camera app and start taking photos or recording videos without unlocking the phone. This feature could free up the Action button for other shortcuts. Initial reports suggest the Capture button will be a solid-state capacitive button using haptic feedback to mimic the feel of a physical button when pressed.

Larger Displays for Pro Models

The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to have larger displays than their predecessors, with the iPhone 16 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch screen and the iPhone 16 Pro Max a 6.9-inch screen. Despite the increase in display size, the phones are only expected to be slightly larger in physical dimensions. The Pro models will also reportedly weigh a few grams more due to larger batteries. The rumored dimensions suggest the iPhone 16 Pro will be 3mm taller and roughly 1mm wider than the iPhone 15 Pro, with similar expansions for the Pro Max.

Smaller Bezels on the Pro Phones

A significant design change is the reduction of bezel size on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to have a 1.2mm bezel, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max's bezel could shrink to 1.15mm. This reduction would allow for the larger screens without a substantial increase in phone size and would give Apple a competitive edge over other high-end smartphones. This change is achieved through a process that makes the copper wiring beneath the phone's screen more compact, although it's challenging to produce displays in high volumes using this method.

Repositioned Cameras on the Standard Models

Lastly, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to feature vertically stacked camera lenses, reverting from the diagonal arrangement seen since the iPhone 13. This design change is likely aimed at enhancing spatial video recording capabilities, aligning with Apple's push for users to create content for the Apple Vision Pro headset. The vertical alignment of the main and ultrawide lenses would facilitate better spatial video capture, making it easier for users to record immersive content.

While the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro may not look drastically different from their predecessors, these rumored design changes could still make a noticeable impact. From new buttons and larger displays to smaller bezels and repositioned cameras, the iPhone 16 lineup promises subtle yet significant enhancements. As the release date approaches, more details are expected to emerge, providing a clearer picture of what to expect from Apple's next-generation smartphones.
