Rumors suggest a redesigned iMac is expected in 2021, and more
- New reports from Mark Gurman said that the iMac will undergo its most significant overhaul since 2012.
- He said that the company will ditch the chin beneath the screen, cut down on display bezels, and move to a flat-edge design on the back.
- Gurman also reported that Apple is working on two new Mac Pro models to release in 2021.
- Interestingly, Gurman also noted that a cheaper version of the Pro Display XDR is in the works — but did not yet provide an estimated launch date.
Apple is planning to unveil it’s long-awaited iMac redesign this year, and possibly a Mac Pro refresh as well, according to Mark Gurman (reliability: 84.38%). Gurman said in his report that the iMac will undergo its most significant overhaul since 2012, noting that the company will ditch the chin beneath the screen, cut down on display bezels, and move to a flat-edge design on the back.
This new design would be in line with the iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPhone 12. It also sounds eerily familiar to similar reports about the next-generation MacBook Pro. Analysts expect the overall appearance to resemble the Pro Display XDR. If true, it’ll most likely be one of the most significant external makeovers of any Apple product this year.
Gurman also reported that Apple is working on two new Mac Pro models to release around 2022. One of the Mac Pro models will feature an Apple-designed M chip in a case that is “half the size of the current Mac Pro, … [with] a mostly aluminum exterior.”
Gurman said the new design may remind people of the Power Mac G4 Cube from 2000-2001. Interestingly, the other Mac Pro model is an update to the current design and could still use Intel processors. Using Intel chips would likely address any customer concerns about software compatibility, especially for enterprise customers.
And finally, rumors have also been circulating that Apple could release a display that’s significantly more affordable than the Pro Display XDR, which starts at $4,999. Gurman said that Apple is in “early development” of a cheaper display that “wouldn’t have the brightness and contrast ratio” of the Pro Display XDR.
Seriously hope so 😍
