Apple continues to reign its supremacy in the tablet market
- Apple continues to dominate tablet market.
- Apple has maintained a steady market share of 31.9%.
- A slow-down in growth is expected later in the year.
A new report from IDC about tablet and Chromebook growth for the second quarter of 2021 shows that Apple continues to dominate the tablet market. IDC says Apple has shipped more iPads than the competition and even when combined, the competition is well below Apple, in shipping.
Apple has seen some great growth in sales with iPads over the past few years. In Q2 2020, Apple sold around 12.5 million iPads, and this year is no different. According to the report, Apple has shipped around 12.9 million iPads in the second quarter of 2021, keeping a market share of 31.9%. Samsung stands in second place, shipping around 8 million tablets and thereby acquiring a 19.6% market share, while Amazon stands in fourth place shipping only about 4.3 million tablets with a 10.7% market share.
This quarter, our teams built on a period of unmatched innovation by sharing powerful new products with our users, at a time when using technology to connect people everywhere has never been more important [...] We’re continuing to press forward in our work to infuse everything we make with the values that define us — by inspiring a new generation of developers to learn to code, moving closer to our 2030 environment goal, and engaging in the urgent work of building a more equitable future. - Tim Cook
However, even though Apple shipped more iPads in 2021 than in 2020, the YoY market growth was significantly smaller than other competitors such as Samsung, Lenovo, and Amazon. Apple's YoY market growth was 3.5%, whereas Samsung saw YoY growth of 13.3%, and Lenovo witnessed a whopping 64.5% YoY growth. Amazon's YoY market growth was reported to be 20.3%.
For Q3 2021, the iPad line has grown 12% YoY with $7.37 billion in revenue, as Apple reported overall records. Although Apple doesn't report unit sales for its products anymore, it's believed that the new M1 iPad Pro , along with the revamped iPad Air 4 and the 8th-Gen iPad, were the reasons behind this huge tablet market share of Apple.
Regardless of all that, IDC says that even though the tablet market currently has positive results during this quarter, it's expected that a slow-down will occur in the preceding quarters.
