  • Today Apple Pay was launched in Mexico, after a long wait for customers in the country.
  • The people of Mexico can enjoy this service starting on February 23, 2021.
  • The service will launch starting with two major banks; Citibanamex and Banorte.

This new information comes from Citibanamex itself, when the company responded to a Tweet confirming the service will be made available soon. In the Tweet, it also explained an easy way to add a card to Apple Pay from any iOS device. They also stated that Apple Pay will help to make the shopping experience easier, safer and most importantly during COVID — contactless.

Additionally, the banks have stated that MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit and debit cards will be supported. Apple has also refreshed their Apple Pay website in Mexico to promote the easy way of adding credit and debit cards to the Wallet app. Apple’s website also showcases some of the businesses accepting Apple Pay as a payment method.

The first two banks enabling the Apple Pay service in Mexico are CitiBanaMex and Banorte, but some other major financial entities have also said that they could join the service soon — like Hey Banco, Indursa and others. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on adding an ‘Apple Card Family’ service in the future, as well as a new financial feature that could extend Apple Card features to more customers without needing to specific using Apple Card, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple Pay was launched back in 2014 at an Apple Event. Apple Pay was marketed as an easy NFC payment method that uses the security of Touch ID and Face ID to make the payments more secure. Importantly, Apple Pay does not share the credit card number with stores, and instead sends a code to approve the transaction. At first, Apple Pay was only available in the United States, but it has expanded to more than 60 countries around the world in the past few years. Most recently, Apple Pay support has been added in Serbia as of June of 2020. Mexico is the first country to join others in accepting Apple Pay in 2021.
