Apple plans a new method for faster and more efficient repair service
- The company will be introducing a new 'iPhone Rear System' repair method.
- It is planned to begin from 23 February and will allow technicians to fix most of the damaged parts of an iPhone without the need for a whole-unit replacement.
- This method includes only the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini.
Apple on Tuesday informed Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) that the company will soon be introducing a new ‘same-unit’ repair method for iPhone 12 models that face certain hardware failures, without the need for a whole-unit replacement.
Generally, Apple technicians perform an analysis of the device that detects hardware failures to determine whether it can be easily repaired or if the device must be entirely replaced. However, following the information this Tuesday, a memo obtained by MacRumors says the company will soon be introducing a new 'iPhone Rear System' instead of a whole-unit replacement. Starting February 23, with this new 'iPhone Rear System', Apple said technicians will be able to repair iPhone 12 models that are experiencing issues with the logic board, Face ID system, or a cracked rear glass, without the need for the models to be entirely replaced.
According to the memo, the new 'iPhone Rear System' will apparently consist of the rear enclosure of the iPhone with all components such as the battery, logic board, wireless charging coil, Taptic Engine, Face ID system, and so on. However, the rear cameras and the display won’t be covered under this method. If the rear cameras are damaged, it will still require a replacement unit. Meanwhile, when it comes to the display, it will be able to be replaced without the need for replacing the entire iPhone, the memo said.
If a customer has an iPhone 12 mini with cracked rear glass, for example, technicians will be able to replace the entire rear portion of the device, with the new enclosure affixed to the original display and rear camera. For this reason, the customer’s display and rear camera must be free of damage or functional failures in order for their device to qualify for this same-unit repair method, according to Apple.
Allegedly, the company is considering this step as a part of its commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the iPhone. It’s also likely to reduce the time required to repair or replace an iPhone at an Apple Store or AASP, thereby resulting in faster and more efficient service. Apparently, the method includes just two out of the four 2020 iPhone models: iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models do not appear to be eligible at this time. Plus, according to Apple, the new repair method will be available in all countries and regions where the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are sold.
