  • Apple engineers have their sights set on bilateral wireless charging for the iPhone, a feature that would allow users to juice up accessories with a simple back-of-phone placement.
  • Word on the street is that the tech giant is customizing firmware to manage transmission speed and optimize charging efficiency, all while crafting a unique user interface to guide users.
  • It's not a done deal though - past engineering challenges and the possibility of delay or cancellation loom.
  • If all goes well, iPhone users might finally be able to join the bilateral wireless charging party, a long-awaited addition that other smartphone fans have been enjoying for a while.
  • With no official word from Apple, fans of the technology keep their fingers crossed for the eventual inclusion of reverse wireless charging on the iPhone.

Apple is reportedly making progress with its full reverse wireless charging technology for the iPhone, despite past engineering challenges. According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple engineers are working on bilateral wireless charging and its software optimizations. The tech giant had originally planned to debut the feature with the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, but missed its target. Image credit: The Indian Express Reverse wireless charging, also known as bilateral wireless charging, would enable iPhone users to recharge accessories such as AirPods just by placing them on the back of their phone. iPhones have had some of the necessary hardware for this technology since the iPhone 12, but the feature has yet to be fully implemented. This could change in the near future, as Apple is continuing to work on the feature and is reportedly developing custom firmware to enable reverse wireless charging, manage the transmission speed and optimize charging efficiency.

In addition to the custom firmware, Apple is also said to be working on a unique user interface for the technology, which would feature on-screen animations and sound effects to guide users on how to use the feature. Despite these efforts, there is still the possibility that reverse wireless charging could be delayed or scrapped altogether, as it has proven to be a challenge for the company since the iPhone 11. While Apple has yet to confirm anything, this technology could be a great addition to the iPhone and a fan-favorite for AirPods owners.
