These new AirPods will boast an infrared camera akin to the Face ID module found on iPhones and iPads. Apple envisions these camera-equipped AirPods integrating seamlessly with Vision Pro and future Apple Vision headsets. Imagine watching a video with Vision Pro and these futuristic AirPods, where turning your head to a specific direction emphasizes the sound source from that area, making the spatial audio experience richer.
But that's not all. The IR camera on these AirPods could detect environmental changes, potentially enabling in-air gesture control, enhancing the human-device interaction in ways previously unimagined. Foxconn, the NPI supplier for the IR camera, is reportedly planning an annual capacity of 18-20 million units, translating to about 10 million pairs of these next-gen AirPods.
Back in February, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned that Apple is not just stopping at AirPods with cameras. The company is also exploring smart glasses similar to Meta Ray-Bans, a smart ring, and future iterations of the Apple Watch. Another intriguing possibility is in-air gesture control. This would allow users to control their AirPods by moving their hands near the earbuds instead of physically touching them.
