New CAD renders reveal larger camera modules for this year’s iPhones
- The iPhone camera module is rumored to considerably increase in size this year.
- The larger size should allow for more room to accommodate larger sensors.
- This will therefore increase the iPhone 12S’ low-light photography capabilities and video performance.
New CAD renders shared by Filip Koroy from Everything Apple Pro unveil Apple’s plans for the next iPhone lineup. The list of changes range from a new, more compact notch — to increase the size of the camera module on this year’s iPhone lineup.
As a point of reference, the current iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 31.79 x 34.24 camera module — while this rumored iPhone 12S Pro Max will increase that number to 37.56mm x 36.62mm. The thickness of the module is also expected to increase, from the current 2.78mm all the way up to 3.65mm, a 30% increase.
Something similar is also expected to happen to the camera modules on both the iPhone 12S and iPhone 12S mini, measuring at 28.27mm x 28.26mm with 2.5mm thickness compared to the current 25.21mm x 28.40mm with 2.5mm thickness of the 12 mini’s camera module. Not only are the modules changing dimensions, the lenses are also rumored to be larger, and to adopt a new diagonal arrangement.
The phones are also likely to get thicker, going all the way up to 7.57mm compared to the current 7.31mm. The CAD models also show other slight variations over the current design, like a thicker mmWave antenna and both the mute switch and volume buttons being moved up by a couple millimeters.
These changes in dimensions will allow for larger camera sensors and less space-constrained OIS mechanisms, resulting in photo and video performance better than ever before as well as improving the quality of low-light mode, something iPhones already excel at.
