  • Apple is set to shake things up with the 2025 iPhone SE, rumored to launch with Apple's very own 5G modem.
  • Say hello to Sinope: Apple's custom chip aiming to outpace Qualcomm.
  • The 2025 iPhone SE is packing something special—find out what’s under the hood!

Apple Inc. is set to unveil its much-anticipated custom 5G modem chip in the upcoming 2025 iPhone SE, according to reports from Bloomberg. This move marks a significant shift as Apple steps away from its current reliance on Qualcomm Inc. for modem technology.

Apple's iPhone SE 4 is rumored to launch in March 2025 with Apple's new in-house 5G modem, along with an updated design.

A New Era for iPhone SE

The new modem, internally dubbed "Sinope," is developed by Apple's engineering team and manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). Sinope is engineered to handle data downloads at speeds reaching up to 4 gigabits per second. While this is impressive, it falls short of Qualcomm’s latest offering, which supports speeds up to 10 gigabits per second.

Apple Sinope: Technical Insights

One of the primary reasons Sinope doesn't match Qualcomm’s speed is its limited frequency support. Unlike Qualcomm’s modems that operate over both mmWave and Sub-6GHz bands, Sinope is confined to the Sub-6GHz spectrum. This restriction curtails the available bandwidth, impacting overall performance.

Additionally, Sinope trails in implementing carrier aggregation—a method that allows data transmission over multiple frequency bands to enhance speed. Reports indicate that Sinope utilizes half the number of frequency blocks compared to Qualcomm’s latest chips.

Enhancing Performance and Efficiency

Despite these limitations, Apple aims to optimize Sinope’s performance through intelligent management by the main processor. This integration is designed to boost wireless coverage and improve power efficiency, potentially narrowing the performance gap with third-party modems that leverage artificial intelligence for optimization.

Future-Proofing with Carpo and Beyond

In the iPhone SE 4, Sinope will work in tandem with an Apple-developed RF front end known as "Carpo." Carpo plays a crucial role in filtering noise from radio signals and amplifying them for smoother processing by the modem.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to release more advanced custom modems. By 2026, a second-generation chip is expected to double download speeds to 6 gigabits per second, followed by the introduction of the "Prometheus" modem in 2027, which aims to surpass Qualcomm’s technology and support next-generation features like advanced AI functionalities and satellite networks.

Strategic Roadmap and Industry Impact

Apple's transition to in-house modem production is part of a broader three-year strategy to phase out Qualcomm chips by 2026. This ambitious plan involves integrating modems directly into the main processor, potentially extending to other product lines such as Mac computers and the Vision Pro headset.

An Apple-designed 5G modem has been rumored for years. In 2025, analysts say Apple will finally unveil their in-house 5G modem with the launch of iPhone SE 4 in March.

Practical Implications for Consumers

While the initial Sinope chip may not offer the highest theoretical speeds, Apple assures that real-world performance will remain robust for everyday users. The new modem also introduces dual SIM standby capabilities, allowing users to maintain two active SIM cards simultaneously—a feature increasingly relevant in today’s connected world.

Conclusion: A Bold Step Forward

Apple’s foray into custom 5G modem development underscores its commitment to greater control over its hardware ecosystem. Although Sinope may not yet rival Qualcomm’s top-tier performance, the strategic integration and planned advancements position Apple to potentially lead in modem technology in the near future.

As the tech community eagerly awaits the 2025 iPhone SE 4 release, all eyes will be on how Apple's "Sinope" chip performs in real-world scenarios and whether Apple can truly outpace its long-time partner, Qualcomm.
