Report: iPhone 13 models to launch with bigger batteries and expanded mmWave 5G roll out
- Apple is reportedly expanding support for mmWave 5G to additional countries with the launch of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.
- The new devices will see larger batteries and more efficient chips.
Apple is set to unveil the next generation of iPhones in September, and will include notable improvements to internals, a report from TrendForce claims.
The analyst suggests that support for mmWave 5G cellular technology will expand to more countries, after being limited to the United States on the iPhone 12. This means that devices in more countries will support the faster version of 5G and will be compatible if the user has a cellular plan that supports it.
In addition, TrendForce says that the iPhone 13 will use a faster 5nm chip for improved performance and efficiency, reducing the power consumption. These features have been rumored before, with a recent report from Bloomberg saying that a smaller notch, 120Hz display, camera improvements, and A15 Bionic chip should be expected with the 2021 iPhone lineup.
The iPhone 13 lineup will likely include some significant changes. Apple will release four models, with a 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 13, 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max, similar to last year’s lineup.
- Smaller notch: All models will get a smaller display cutout which will be at least 30% reduced in size compared to the current design.
- Larger batteries: According to rumors, the batteries in all models will increase, with the Pro model expected to see an 18% larger battery.
- A15 Bionic: The new chip will be 5-nanometers and should be more efficient and include slight improvements to performance in all models.
- Camera design: On the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, the camera design is expected to be different. The Pro models should see much larger lenses.
- Camera features: Sensor-shift stabilisation could be expanded to all models, while ultra-wide on all iPhone models will see improvements, although more notably on Pro models.
- 5G and WiFi 6E: The introduction of WiFi 6E will bring faster speeds and support for the 6GHz standard on supported Wi-Fi routers. mmWave 5G may also be expanded to other countries.
- New colors: As usual, Apple will launch the iPhone 13 in a new range of colours, while the Pacific Blue finish on the Pro models may be replaced with an orange/bronze.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max should include some additional features that will not be featured on the standard models.
- 120Hz display: The two Pro models will use an LTPO display to enable a smoother 120Hz refresh rate, which could also support an Always on Display.
- Improved low light captures: Larger lenses will bring in more light and improve the Night Mode feature with more detail and less noise.
- Autofocus: This will improve the sharpness of images through upgrades to the sensor over the iPhone 12 models.
- Astrophotography Mode: This is rumored to support moon and star detection in the night sky, although information about this is limited and is not definite.
- Portrait Video: Similar to Portrait Photos, while recording, the background behind a subject will be blurred, and users may be able to adjust the amount of blur in editing.
- ProRes support: This format will introduce high quality video with the drawback of larger file sizes, but more control when adjusting parts of the video in post-production.
