  • Some configurations of iMac were discontinued by Apple earlier today, namely the 512GB and 1TB configurations of the 4K iMac.
  • This comes not long after the company completely discontinued the iMac Pro.
  • This may point to an imminent iMac refresh, according to analysts.

Some configurations of iMac have been discontinued by Apple earlier today, not long after the company completely discontinued the iMac Pro and removed it from the store entirely.

As of now, 512GB and 1TB SSD configurations of the 4K Retina 21.5-inch iMac have been removed. The only configurations still available are the 256GB SSD and 1TB Fusion Drive options. These iMac models were introduced back in 2019, and were minor improvements over their predecessors. They brought more storage options and new (at the time) 8th-generation Intel processors, all while keeping the same design. From The Verge:

A big iMac redesign has been rumored in the works for some time. Apple is expected to replace the 27-inch and 21.5-inch versions of the iMac with a redesigned iMac and will likely revamp the Mac Pro sometime this year. In January, Bloomberg reported that the update would have a flat-back design and do away with the “chin” beneath the screen.

It’s also been reported by ‘someone related to Apple’s supply chain’ that both the 512GB and 1TB SSD configurations stopped production ‘a while ago’ and would only be available while supplies lasted.

This has raised many questions on whether Apple may be ready to release the new iMacs powered by Apple Silicon. Also, the question remains about whether they’ll finally ditch the classic iMac design — the same design which has been in use for almost a decade. Rumors point to a completely redesigned model coming later this year, which would bring new display technology, slimmer bezels, iPad Pro-like design language and for the first time since 1998, more color options to the iMac.
