  • The leaked files include upcoming plans for two new MacBooks and an Apple Watch.
  • They were stolen from one of Apple’s manufacturers.
  • Another company was also affected by the ransomware attack.

Apple was recently under ransomware attack, almost instantly after their ’Spring Loaded’ event. The first report of this attack was confirmed by Bloomberg, however there is no confirmation coming from Cupertino whether or not this attack is legitimate.

The group behind the attack, known as “REvil”, alternatively known as “Sodinokibi”, are a hacker group from Russia. The group recently published a blog on Tuesday claiming to have accessed files stored on the computer network of Quanta Computer Inc, one of the many manufacturers in charge of manufacturing MacBooks.

Some of the supposedly leaked documents reveal a new MacBook Pro with the HDMI port and SD card slot, which were removed back in 2016 in favor of a full USB-C experience. Interestingly, the documents also reveal the removal of the Touch Bar, which are present on newer MacBook Pro’s. However, most notably the return of MagSafe connector is shown. MagSafe has been something many users have been wanting for years, after Apple ditched it for USB-C.

In the blog, they expressed how they would do it for Apple fans, stating the following:

In order not to wait for the upcoming Apple presentations, today we, the REvil group, will provide data on the upcoming releases of the company so beloved by many. Tim Cook can say thank you Quanta. From our side, a lot of time has been devoted to solving this problem.

While not only getting access to files for MacBook’s and a new unreleased Apple Watch, they also have leaked data for Lenovo devices, specifically Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops. This is not the first time the same group targeted a huge tech company, as they also went after Acer, wanted $50 Million (USD) in order to delete all the leaked files.

The group is reportedly going to leak more and more documents by day, until May they said in the statement. It is unclear what Apple might do to take action against this group.
