iPhone 12 sales now outperform iPhone 11
- A new report from Counterpoint Research suggests that the iPhone 12 series has more active users than the iPhone 11 series did at the same time last year.
- Interestingly, the iPhone 11 proved to be the best-selling iPhone at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021.
- These figures are particularly impressive because the iPhone 12 was delayed due to the effects of the pandemic on Apple’s manufacturing partners.
A new report from insights company Counterpoint Research suggests that the iPhone 12 series — which includes the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max — has had more active users in the first quarter of 2021 than the iPhone 11 series did at the same time last year.
As we reported earlier in the year, iPhone 11 proved to be the best-selling iPhone at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021. Further, these figures are particularly impressive because the iPhone 12 was delayed due to the effects of the pandemic on Apple’s manufacturing partners.
From Counterpoint Research:
Comparing the Q1 2021 iPhone installed base with that in Q1 2020, initial sales of the iPhone 12 series were better than the iPhone 11 series. The iPhone 11 series' share in the total iPhone installed base was at 15% in Q1 2020 compared to the iPhone 12 series' 16% in Q1 2021. It may be noted here that the iPhone 12 series' release date was one month later than that for the iPhone 11 series. Further, the iPhone 12 series also competes with the low-tier iPhone SE 2020.
Counterpoint Research also said that the Pro models also saw an increase year-over-year. In quarter one of 2020, the iPhone 11 Pro models accounted for 44% of the installed base, they said. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro models accounted for 54% during the same quarter of this year. Even with the 12 and 12 mini competition, the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max models were more popular, they said.
From Counterpoint Research:
The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max's installed base accounted for 44% in Q1 2020 compared to the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max's 54% in Q1 2021," says Counterpoint Research. "Compared to their predecessors, the iPhone 12 series Pro models have more differentiated features, like in the camera.
In another report, Counterpoint said this iPhone was the best-selling 5G phone in October:
There is a large pent-up demand for 5G upgrade, especially within the iOS base, which is now getting converted into sales. This was complemented by strong carrier promos, especially in the US, which accounted for over one-third of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro sales for the month. All carriers were offering the iPhone 12 for $0 through a mix of the trade-in and unlimited plans. China and Japan also saw strong initial demand for the 12 series. Compared to most of the other 5G models, which have a regional presence, the iPhone 12 has a wider market coverage — it is available in over 140 countries, thus helping sales.
The iPhone 12 series, while featuring a return to the classic iPhone 4 / iPhone 5 design, also consists of several standout features. This includes an OLED display on all models, improved cameras, Apple’s first 5nm A-series processor — and most importantly for many, it also is the first iPhone to include 5G connectivity.
