You’ve probably heard the news already — Apple is planning to go portless in 2021. But now, further rumors have revealed more details about what to expect going forward.
The recent addition of MagSafe technology in the iPhone will be used to not only introduce a portless iPhone with ‘no gaps weakening the chassis’, but also to provide Apple with technology that will allow them to better maintain their ‘Made For iPhone’ seal of approval.
"Not all iPhones next year will be port-less, but one will be… the transition is happening,” he explained. “MagSafe is the bridge between lightning and [portless]. It’s also the way Apple can keep things somewhat proprietary without giving in to something as universal as USB-C.”
From several reports, it seems like Apple is hoping to achieve a full range of portless iPhone’s by 2022-2023. The first seeds were planted this year, with the optional addition of MagSafe in the iPhone 12 series. For now, you can still continue to charge your device through the Lightning port. However, it is now becoming clear that Apple will release at least one portless iPhone in 2021, with the rest of the iPhone range joining in 2022 or 2023. Many analysts expect Apple to greatly expand their MagSafe technology on the iPhone, which will allow them to create smaller, lighter and more capable iPhones than ever before. Our take: Personally, I think it will be interesting to see whether customers actually like the current version of MagSafe technology for iPhone. From what I’ve seen, not many people have purchased the optional MagSafe charger with their new iPhone 12’s. A portless iPhone would open up a big opportunity for Apple.
