The future of Apple TV is uncertain as Apple has no clear plans
- The future of Apple TV reportedly lacks certainty as Apple fails to “reinvent” the TV experience.
- Apple last updated the Apple TV in April, with a new processor and redesigned Siri Remote.
It is becoming increasingly unclear what Apple is planning for the smart home, with few updates to the Apple TV and the recent removal of the full-sized HomePod from the lineup. Now, a report from Bloomberg suggests even Apple hasn’t solidified its future plans.
According to Mark Gurman (reliability: 84.38%), a smart-home-focused device, which combines HomePod, FaceTime, and Apple TV is still on track for release in 2023. This could compete with similar products from Amazon and Google, and offer a more portable and convenient smart home hub than the Apple TV currently is.
However, because Apple has failed to reduce the price of the Apple TV hardware and add worthwhile new features, it could end up shelving the product alongside the full-sized HomePod, which was discontinued earlier this year. Meanwhile, similar product lines like the Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV stick have seen cheaper, ‘lite’ versions, offering stripped-down feature sets at greatly reduced prices.
In April, the Apple TV received a minor spec bump, with a more powerful processor and redesigned Siri Remote. Visually, it looks identical to the previous model, released in 2017, and runs the same tvOS 14 operating system.
