New macOS features may be exclusive to Apple Silicon Macs
- According to a recent report by Wired, Apple could make making features in macOS exclusive to MacBooks running on their in-house silicon.

Cupertino recently unveiled their new version of macOS, Monterey. The new version of macOS brings several new upgrades to FaceTime, Maps and to the UX/UI. Most notably, it now has support for Portrait Mode on FaceTime. New information on Apple’s macOS Monterey update has surfaced, revealing that only MacBook’s powered by Apple’s in-house silicon will support it. It could be due to the ISP (Image Signal Processing) on the M Series of chips — which is similar to the ISPs found on the A series of chips, used on iPhones and iPad Air’s. However, the reason for the lack of portrait on Intel-based MacBooks is unclear.
Live Text, a new Google Lens alternative Apple showcased at WWDC, is not present on Intel-based MacBooks either. LiveText allows you to copy-and-paste text on pictures via the Photos app. New features on the Maps app, including Detailed City Mode — which allows users to see the Street View of their desired location, and Interactive Globe-Model are also missing from MacBooks running on Intel MacBooks.
The reasons behind the lack of these features on Intel-Based Macs are currently unknown, and we have reached out to Apple for insight on possible reasons as to why this is.
