iPhone 14 to have 48MP camera, 8K video in 2022
- Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that this year's iPhone will retain the 12MP main camera, while upgrading the pixel size to 2.0μm.
- In 2022, Kuo says Apple’s iPhone lineup will consist of two 6.1-inch iPhones and two 6.7-inch iPhones.
- The 2022 iPhone Pro's are expected to gain a new 48MP main camera, he said.
Acclaimed Apple analyst Ming-Chu Kuo (reliability: 80.95%) has released a sweeping statement on Apple's upcoming iPhone updates for later this year as well as late 2022.
This year, Kuo predicts that the next iPhone will retain the 12MP main camera resolution, with an upgraded pixel size of 2.0μm due to a slight increase in sensor size. He also stated that Apple will reduce the size of the iPhone’s Face ID sensors this year, resulting in a 10% decrease in the overall size of the notch.
In 2022, Kuo says Apple’s iPhone lineup will consist of two 6.1-inch iPhones and two 6.7-inch iPhones. That would mean that Apple may stop making the 5.4-inch iPhone mini starting from late next year, after allegedly falling below Apple’s shipment expectations in 2020. The 2022 iPhone Pro's are expected to gain a new 48MP main camera, he said, which can output 12MP images. This would be a significant change — Apple’s main camera has remained at 12MP since the introduction of the iPhone 6S in 2015.
From Gizmo China:
According to reports, this sensor will be a new and exclusive camera from Sony. This sensor will be more conducive and will significantly increase lens ASP. The use of 48MP cameras in the 2022 iPhones will force more Android models to adopt large-area/outsole CIS and will drive high-end lens specification upgrades, ASPs and shipments.
Along with a 48MP main camera, Apple will also update the pixel pitch to a larger size of 2.5μm, according to Kuo. The iPhone 12 currently has a 12MP main camera with a 1.7μm pitch. The lineup is also expected to break ground by featuring 8K video capture, he said.
It has been alleged that 2021 may be an ‘S’ year for the iPhone, since the device brings mainly improvements and upgrades but no major changes to the design. So far, the next iPhone series is allegedly on course to launch around September 2021 — and is already rumored to bring improvements like a new A15 bionic chip, up to 1TB storage, 120Hz displays and a significantly larger battery. There have also been several reports of an upcoming Touch ID revival.
